AUSTRIA: HAIDER AND FPÖ TO BOYCOTT CONSENSUS CONFERENCE ON BILINGUAL SIGNS

Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel has called a second so-called
“consensus conference” on the issue of bilingual signs in Southern Carinthia
for March 13th. Jörg Haider and the Carinthian Freedom Party (FPÖ) announced
that they will not participate. Schüssel has responded that the conference
will take place anyway.


EU CONSTITUTION TO BE TRANSLATED INTO WELSH, BUT NOT OTHER UK LANGUAGES

Plaid Cymru Euro-MP Jill Evans has welcomed the news that the proposed EU
Constitution will be translated into Welsh. A formal announcement came
yesterday from UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw in a response to a
parliamentary question tabled by the party's UK parliamentary leader Elfyn
Llwyd MP. However, the British government has no plans to translate the
Constitution into any of the UK's other indigenous languages.


AGREEMENT WITH MIRANDA CITY COUNCIL PREVENTS CLOSURE OF CULTURAL CENTRE

The Miranda do Douro City Council will guarantee the survival of the
Mirandese traditional culture centre Sons da Terra (Sounds of the Earth) by
buying a “considerable” amount of its production of books and CDs. The
agreement avoids the likely closure announced by Sons da Terra. Sons da
Terra works on the recovery of Mirandese traditional songs.


INTERGROUP TO SUPPORT ACTION AGAINST MARI OPPRESSION

Today’s session of the European Parliament Intergroup for Traditional
National Minorities, Constitutional Regions and Regional Languages resolved
to support resolute action against the recent physical attacks on
journalists and politicians of the Finno-Ugric Mari people in the Mari El
Republic of the Russian Federation.


GERMAN GOVERNMENT DEFENDS DANISH MINORITY

The Danish minority party plays a key role in the make-up of the government
for the northern German province of Schleswig-Holstein. This has lead to
attacks against the minority party and minority rights. The minority
commissioner of the German government has now intervened with a press
release.
