Admission for PG courses to be more flexible

By Vijesh Kamath DH News Service Bangalore

Pursuing post-graduate studies in the State is likely to be more flexible
from the next academic year, location-wise at least. The state government
is giving a serious thought to relax the present restriction on students
of one university from pursuing their masters degree in another university
in the State. Presently, only one seat per PG course in a university is
reserved for students from other universities. In other words, if you are
a graduate from Gulbarga University and would like to do your masters in
Physics, say in Bangalore University, there is only one seat available and
competition is usually high.

The government is thinking of relaxing this restriction for outside
university students from the next academic year. In fact, there is a
likelihood of a quantum jump in the number of seats available for students
from other universities. According to the draft admission policy for PG
admissions, 40 per cent of the seats in every PG department in a varsity
will be available for students from other universities of the State. Fifty
per cent of the seats will be reserved for students of same university and
the balance 10 per cent seats will be available for students from
universities outside the State.

Opportunities

The proposed policy will not only provide more mobility for students, but
will also open up opportunities to study courses unique to some
universities. For instance, one can do MSc in Holistic Psychological
Counselling, Audiology and Speech Language Policy and Masters in Human
Consciousness and Yogic Sciences only from Bangalore University as it is
the sole varsity in the State to offer these courses.

Karnatak University is the only university in the State to offer MSc in
Pulp and Paper Sciences. Mysore University offers a host of unique PG
courses like MSc in Urban and Regional Planning, MSc in Sugar Technology,
Masters in Food and Agri-business management and Masters in Information
Management. Masters in Earth Science and Resource Management, Wildlife and
Management are unique to Kuvempu University.
