First Great Western is to build on its Welsh language policy by
introducing initiatives to encourage and promote the use of the language
across its network. At present on board bilingual employees make
announcements in both Welsh and English, with the new policy aimed at
encouraging non-Welsh speakers to make simple announcements such as "
welcome on board" bilingually, with the possibility of Welsh language
lessons being available for employees.

Glenda Lamont, Customer Service Director for First Great Western, said
"We understand that many people prefer to communicate through the medium of
Welsh and it is our intention to provide a realistic, sensible and
consistent bilingual service" Meri Huws, Chair of the Welsh Language
Board, welcomed the move and said " First Great Westerns voluntary
language policy is a clear indication of its dedication to its Welsh
speaking customers"

First Great Western have for a number of years produced bilingual
documents including timetables for Welsh bound services, the Passengers
Charter and various leaflets. Future plans will see this policy encompass
information posters and the train companys website.
