Stellenbosch in search for vice-chancellor

July 05, 2006, 08:00

The University of Stellenbosch hopes to appoint a new rector before June
next year. This follows the announcement that Prof Chris Brink, the
current rector and vice-chancellor, is to be appointed as the
vice-chancellor of Newcastle University in England. Brink will take up his
new appointment in mid 2007. The process of appointing a rector and
vice-chancellor for Stellenbosch University will start during the second
semester.

With regard to the language debate, the rector has invited the convocation
executive to consider drawing up their own conceptual framework, and to
combine it with the existing process of revising the language policy. The
revision process should be completed before Brink leaves the university.
There has been some criticism of the Afrikaans language policy at Maties.
