Latino Group Gathers To Sing Anthem In English

John Cody Reporting

CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio 780) -- A small group of Mexican-American
demonstrators gathered Friday on Michigan Ave. to sing the Star Spangled
Banner in English and say that's the only way it should be sung in the
United States. Fenton High School student Lissandra Montenegro led off the
music with her English version. Fabian Morales, member of the
confederation of Mexican Organizations of Illinois, asserted that those
producing a Spanish language version of the anthem are not leaders in the
Mexican-American community, but are only working for their own bests
interests.

Speaking in the Plaza of the Americas, directly across Michigan from the
Tribune Tower, Morales said now is a very bad time to risk alienating US
representatives who are considering what sort of changes they should make
to the rules regulating immigration policy.
