Displacements for development should be as per a rehab policy

Jamshedpur, May 07: Any displacement of tribals for proposed development
projects should be made only after a concrete rehabilitation policy is in
place, Union Minister of State for Home Manik Gavit has said. "I do favour
any development at the expense of the interests of the tribal community,"
Gavit told reporters here yesterday after giving away the 'Santhali
Sahitya Ratan' Award to renowned Santhali author Babulal Murmu. To a query
on Kurmis being included in the ST category, Gavit said only the
parliament could take a decision on the matter, provided there was demand
from a two-third majority for such a move.

Earlier, speaking at the award function, he lauded the role of tribal
organisations such as the All India Santhali Bhasa Morcha and All India
Santhali Education Council in the promotion of Santhali, a tribal
language. He also gave away awards to 43 persons for their role to get
Santhali language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The
awards were instituted by All India Santhali Education Council, All India
Santhali Bhasa Morcha and other tribal organisations.
