Centre urged to accord classical language tag to Kannada

BANGALORE: Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (T.A. Narayana Gowda faction) on
Saturday held a massive public meeting at Palace Grounds here as part
of the sixth Swabhimani Kannadigara Samavesha. The meeting, which was
inaugurated by the former Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University D.
Javare Gowda, adopted 26 resolutions. Speakers urged the Union
Government to accord classical language status to Kannada, evolve an
inter-State river water policy, implement recommendations of the
Mahajan Commission and name the Devanahalli international airport
after Kempe Gowda. The Suttur Math seer Shivarathreshwara Deshikendra
Swamiji, Bangalore South MP and BJP leader H.N. Ananth Kumar, the
former Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy, film director Prem and other
dignitaries participated in the meeting.

Earlier, hundreds of vedike activists from across the State took out a
huge procession from the Government Arts College Grounds, opposite
Central College, to Palace Grounds. Traffic was affected on the
procession route: Kempe Gowda Road, Racecourse Road, Sankey Road and
Ramana Maharshi Road. The police had tightened security all along the
procession route and at Palace Grounds. Meanwhile, members of the
other faction of the vedike, headed by Praveen Kumar Shetty, resorted
to rail blockade at the city railway station in support of their
demands. Their demands are similar to the ones of the other faction.
