Bank talks our language on internet
Dec 19 2007 by David R. Jones, Daily Post

HSBC has become the first UK high street bank to create an official
Welsh language website. The bank's UK chief executive Dyfrig John said
the launch of the www.hsbc. co.uk/cymru site was part of HSBC's growth
programme for Wales. Mr John said the bank had long recognised the
importance of the Welsh language, with bilingual staff, brochures,
applications forms and signage in its branches.
It was the first private sector company to commit to a Welsh language
policy and the first bank to issue a Welsh credit card. The new Welsh
language website was the next step in the continuation of that policy.

Earlier this year Alan Jarman was appointed as HSBC's chief executive
for Wales, the first time the organisation had established a chief
executive role in the principality. Mr Jarman said: "HSBC has a long
and proud history in Wales, which is a key business area for HSBC. We
employ more than 2,700 people here and have the highest market share
compared with any area in the UK. "In the last year, HSBC has invested
heavily in its branch and commercial centre network in Wales. "Between
the end of 2006 and start of 2007, Wrexham area has benefited from a
£3.4m investment with a brand new purpose built commercial centre and
revamped retail branch to support personal and business customers."

Assembly heritage minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas congratulated the bank
on developing a Welsh language website and urged Welsh speakers to use
the service. The newly launched website contains information on the
history of HSBC in Wales, its bilingual policy, employment
opportunities, corporate social responsibility and details of HSBC's
community programmes.
