Law to give Pandor more power under consideration

Education authorities are considering a contentious law that, among other
things, will give Education Minister Naledi Pandor more power to intervene
in the running of schools and colleges in the provinces. As things stand,
the provision of education at school, further education and training
colleges and at the teachers college level constitutionally falls under
the competency of provincial governments. The push for more power for
Pandor has the support of the SA Democratic Teachers Union, which says it
is unhappy at the way education is handled by most provincial Education
Departments. It argues that institutions like teachers colleges and
further education and training colleges are a national resource that
should not be left to individual provinces.
