Breaking News: Idaho considers English-official law
Posted: Saturday, February 24, 2007 12:52 AM EST

BOISE, Idaho - Idaho has become the latest state to consider making
English its only official language.

The Senate State Affairs committee agreed today to debate the plan next
week, as Republicans beat back an attempt by Democrats on the panel to
kill the measure.

Democrats had argued it's divisive and does nothing to change the present
situation _ where nearly all Idaho affairs are now conducted in English,
by the state's 96 percent white population.

Sen. Mel Richardson told the committee his bill is modeled after laws in
neighboring Utah and Arizona and would make English the state's "official
language."

Richardson says this bill is meant as encouragement for people coming
across America's borders, including from Mexico, to speak English and help
"unify the United States" behind a single language.

So far, about 28 states have passed similar bills.
