Education Board OK's Chinese Language School

The Massachusetts Board of Education has given the green light to the
state's first charter school with classes taught mostly in Chinese. The
panel voted seven to two at their meeting Tuesday in Malden to grant a
charter for the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion School. The charter
school has approval to open this fall. It will serve up to 300 students,
kindergarten through eighth grade, from Springfield and dozens of other
cities in western Massachusetts. Most classes would be exclusively taught
in Mandarin Chinese.

Easthampton businessman Richard Alcorn is the lead writer of the school's
charter application. He says the school makes sense given that China is
one of the largest economies in the world.
