Summer School on Documenting Endangered Iranian Languages
University of Kiel, Department of General Linguistics,
August 20-31, 2007.

The Summer School will provide a solid grounding in the theory and practice
of language documentation, with an emphasis on the Iranian languages, but
including other languages spoken across the Middle East and Central Asia.
It will be suitable for undergraduates and graduates in linguistics,
anthropology, ethnology or related fields with at least two years training
in linguistics, and a genuine interest in conducting future research on the
endangered languages and cultures of the region. The course language is
English.

The course is financed by the Volkswagen Foundation's programme for
documenting endangered languages (DoBeS, Dokumentation Bedrohter Sprachen).
Much of the expertise stems from experienced field workers and language
archivists involved in that programme. The courses offered will cover the
fundamentals of language documentation such as recording practice and
equipment, sound processing software, tools for grammar and dictionary
creation, and hands-on practice in linguistic field work. There will also
be seminars and lectures on anthropological topics, working with diaspora
communities, specifics of the Iranian languages, and archiving issues.

Note also that the Second International Conference on Iranian Linguistics
is scheduled for the weekend immediately prior to the Summer School, and
will take place in Hamburg, just one hour´s drive from Kiel - see
http://www.linguistik.uni-kiel.de/icil2/ for details and registration.
