Immersion program provides new hope for preserving Ojibwe language

The number of people who are fluent in the Ojibwe language is fading
fast. On the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota, the
language is rarely spoken in most homes. The average age of Ojibwe
speakers there, is about 70. There's a new elementary school program
at Leech Lake that's designed to revive the language. Its young
students hear only Ojibwe in the classroom -- all day, every day.
Proponents say total immersion in the language is the best way to
ensure its survival.
