Turkey: 53 Mayors Are Fined for Backing Kurdish TV

A court fined 53 mayors from Turkey's largely Kurdish southeast on
charges of helping rebels with their written request to the Danish
prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, not to shut down the
Danish-based Kurdish satellite broadcaster ROJ TV, Turkey's official
Anatolian News Agency reported. Turkish authorities say the station
has links with a Kurdish militant organization, the Kurdistan Workers
Party. The court first sentenced the mayors to two and a half months
in prison but immediately reduced the sentences to fines.
