New education policy in May, says Ahsan

ISLAMABAD: Federal Education Minister Ahsan Iqbal Friday said that a
new education policy to be presented in the Federal Cabinet for
approval by the end of May. The National Assembly discussed the
national education policy in detail on Friday and decided that work on
new syllabus will be completed by National Curriculum Council (NCC) in
2008. Speaking in the question hour in the National Assembly, Minister
for Education Ahsan Iqbal said that National Curriculum Council is
looking into this matter, and keeping in view developed countries
curriculum it will be formed. He said that it will be on the pattern
of 21 century. Responding to another question regarding madrissa
syllabus, he said that we will also deliberate on this issue.
Participating in the debate, MNA Ayaz Ameer questioned about two
medium of education including English and Urdu, asking that is there
any consideration in this regards. Ahsan Iqbal remarked that it is our
failure that two systems are in the country.

He said that in coming two or three years one language system will be
introduced and teachers will also be trained in this regard. Te APP
adds: "We are reviewing over all curricula and holding transparent
consultations to prepare a draft for the new policy," he told media
persons outside the Parliament House. He said the new policy to be
presented in the Lower House for discussion before approval will
reflect aspiration of people. Ahsan Iqbal said that new infrastructure
will be developed besides replacing the teachers. He informed that
previous government has prepared a draft of the education policy, but
now it will be made in accordance with the democratic norms and
challenges of 21st century.

About implementation of the new policy, he said, "It will be
implemented in letter and spirit and all the political parties will be
taken into confidence." Replying a query, he said, "I have directed to
remove glorification of military dictatorship from the curricula that
should reflect the democratic rules in the country."
