Monterey Institute of International Studies Offers Solution to New
Language Requirement

Last update: 7:21 p.m. EDT Aug. 28, 2008
MONTEREY, Calif., Aug 28, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Monterey
Institute of International Studies (MIIS) is offering to partner with
the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) to design a custom
language learning program for its members. Located at one of the
nation's premier golfing destinations--the Monterey Peninsula--the
MIIS language program would enable its members to meet the new
specifications for English skills while providing opportunities to
practice their golf game.
The LPGA recently announced that beginning in 2009, all players who
have been on tour for two years must pass an oral evaluation of their
English skills. Players who fail to pass the evaluation will have
their membership suspended. The rule is effective immediately for new
players.

"We hope to help the LPGA by offering a solution for their players,"
said MIIS president, Dr. Clara Yu. "Our offer would promote and
support the communicative competence of its members and aid them in
achieving the outcomes required to meet the LPGA's new language
standards." In a letter to commissioner Carolyn Blevins, MIIS offers
to develop a curriculum using a communicative approach to language
study and a variety of techniques and media, including the analysis of
golf game videos, role-playing of interactions with fans and sponsors,
and highlighting the vocabulary of the works of golf. While honing
their language skills at MIIS, players can practice their golf game at
one of the twelve courses available on the Monterey Peninsula.

MIIS, located in Monterey, California, was founded as a language
school in 1955 and became an affiliate of Middlebury College of
Middlebury, Vermont in 2005. The campus is located in the heart of
historic Monterey, and offers graduate degrees in translation and
interpretation, international policy studies, international trade
policy, international environmental policy, business administration
and language teaching. For more information about MIIS please call
