£1.5M TO TEACH FOREIGN PUPILS ENGLISH

Up to £1.5 million may have to be spent by city education bosses to
cope with an influx of non-English speakers. A report to Aberdeen City
Council has revealed that about 1,500 pupils out of about 22,000
children do not speak English as their first language. Since the start
of the current school year 509 foreign pupils have started in the
city, 383 of them Polish. St Machar, Torry and Harlaw academies have
the highest numbers of foreign pupils. The report to Friday's Policy
and Strategy (education) committee suggests spending as much as
£1,546,600 on the equivalent of 27 full-time employees, to add to the
existing 14 staff in the English as an Additional Language department.
