Wooing Hispanics, With Spanish

By JULIE BOSMAN

Three weeks from the Texas primary on March 4, the Democratic candidates
have already started a fierce tug-of-war over the states Hispanic voters.
Senator Barack Obama fired a shot on Tuesday with a Spanish-language radio
advertisement that is biographical, highlighting his education at Harvard
Law School and his decision to work as a community organizer in Chicago
after graduating. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton put forth her own
Spanish-language advertisement (on health insurance, the cost of living
and wages) on Tuesday as well, along with three in English.

Early nominating contests have shown that Mrs. Clinton has an edge with
Hispanic voters. In California and Nevada, they turned out in large
numbers for her and helped her secure victories. And more than Mr. Obama,
Mrs. Clinton has spoken of Texas as a prize that she believes she can win
partly because of the states estimated eight million Hispanics. To get a
jump on the race there, Mrs. Clinton left the Chesapeake area on Tuesday
to begin a two-day campaign swing through Texas, while Mr. Obama headed to
Wisconsin in advance of its primary next Tuesday.

Mr. Obama has repeatedly defended his ability to attract Hispanic voters,
most recently in an interview Monday with ABC and Politico.com. I think
its just lack of information, Mr. Obama said, adding that Hispanic voters
might be more familiar with Mrs. Clinton because of her husband. And my
vote among Latinos in my home state of Illinois, when I ran, for example,
was 75 percent, despite having a very strong Hispanic candidate in the
race.
