Abrams & Strogatz (2003) is an interesting exercise, but the assumption ("a
highly connected population with no spatial or social structure in which all
speakers are monolingual") is not much more use to students of
sociolinguistics than the earlier "idealized monolinguals" that divided our
field many years ago.
