Language debate resurfaces



Language rights are back in the spotlight with ANC president Jacob
Zuma wading in on the issue of mother tongue use and the IFP laying
charges against the Justice Department for contravening the language
rights of prisoners. This comes as the world prepares to celebrate
International Mother Language Day on Thursday. Focusing on
mother-tongue issues in his party's online newsletter yesterday, Zuma
suggested that the proposed school pledge be recited in different
languages, depending on the region. He said the pledge creates an
opportunity to encourage children to develop a sense of pride in their
country as well as their language.
