Hong Kong's English-language South China Morning Post launches Taiwan edition

Posted by Alisa Zykova on February 10, 2009 at 12:44 PM

In light of the expanding ties between Taiwan and China, Hong Kong's
English-language daily newspaper the South China Morning Post (SCMP)
will be launching a bilingual edition in Taiwan. Since there are
already three English-language newspapers in Taiwan, the SCMP will be
centered on online ventures in Chinese, but will have occasional news
content in English.

The SCMP will be hiring journalists to cover political and economic
topics, launching an online counterpart by the end of summer and may
be publishing a print version. Financial backing will be offered by
Hong Kong, members of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) as well a
transnational bank in Taiwan.

The daily was launched over a hundred years ago and is considered "one
of the top English-language" titles in Asia with about 100,000
subscribers, The Taipei Times wrote. Previously, Hong Kong
publications Apple Daily and Next Magazine launched Taiwanese
editions.
