Language policy: state files appeal
25 May 2009, 2350 hrs IST

The government has filed a writ appeal before a division Bench of the
high court, challenging the April 6 order of a single Bench. The order
directed the state to consider within four weeks, the fresh
application to be filed by an educational institution seeking
registration as an English-medium school. That order followed the full
Bench's verdict (July 2, 2008) on the government's language policy.

The single Bench had quashed the endorsement issued by the DDPI
rejecting the application by Rajajinagar Education Society, which runs
Aurobindu Vidya Mandir. The society, along with Karnataka Unaided
Schools Managements Association, challenged the order citing the 1994
language policy. The full Bench had held right to education is a
fundamental right.
