Year of Russian Language kicks off in China

The opening ceremony for the "Year of Russian Language" was held here
Friday night as China and Russia seek to boost cultural exchanges and
bilateral ties.

Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong and Russian Deputy Prime Minister
Alexander Zhukov attended the ceremony in the Great Hall of the People
in downtown Beijing.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin
were not at the ceremony but sent congratulatory letters.

In his letter, Wen noted that China and Russia are friendly neighbors
with long and splendid civilizations. The two peoples respect and
learn from each other and have built a deep friendship. The exchanges
of language and culture have played an important role in this process.
