Ermelo school changes language policy

Hoërskool Ermelo has conditionally agreed to change its language
policy to accommodate English-speaking pupils, Beeld newspaper
reports.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The chairman of the school's governing body, Barend Greyling, said in
an affidavit handed to the Constitutional Court, that English-speaking
pupils would be allowed to attend the school. But this would be on
condition that English pupils may only use facilities currently not
being utilised by Afrikaans-speaking pupils. "Afrikaans will remain
the primary medium of tuition at the Hoërskool Ermelo," stated
Greyling.

There are currently about 15 unused classrooms at the school, reported
Beeld. The Constitutional Court ruled in October that the Mpumalanga
education department acted unlawfully when it forced the Afrikaans
Hoërskool Ermelo to become a parallel medium school. However, the
Constitutional Court ordered the school to review its language policy
within the context of the basic human rights enshrined in the
Constitution.
