Plans afoot: Border Areas Development Authority chief Chandrakant
Bellad at a meeting with officials in Chitradurga on Wednesday.
Chitradurga: The Karnataka Border Areas Development Authority will
accord priority to improving educational standards in border areas of
the State, its chairman, Chandrakant Gurappa Bellad, has said.
Addressing presspersons after holding a review meeting with senior
officials here on Wednesday, he said that during his visits to several
border districts of the State, he had observed that many of them
lacked proper educational infrastructure. Mr. Bellad said that
Karnataka shared its border with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala,
Maharashtra and Goa. Over 50 taluks in 17 districts bordering these
States came under the purview of the authority.

“Our priority is to set up model Kannada-medium schools in these
regions, mainly in rural areas. During this year, we wish to open at
least 40 such schools,” he added. He said the authority was
established in March this year, and the Government had initially
granted it Rs. 10 crore so that it could undertake various development
programmes. He said that 20 Samskritika Bhavans (cultural halls) with
a seating capacity of 500 people each would be built in various taluks
for the benefit of folk artistes. A part of the Rs. 10-crore would
also be used to set up libraries in these areas.

With regard to improving the standards of living in these regions, he
said the authority would focus on promoting cottage industries by
providing better marketing facilities. “We also hope to start
job-oriented courses in these areas to help youngsters,” he added. The
protection of forest land would be among the major objectives of the
authority, which would be achieved by constituting gram aranya samitis
(village forest committees), he added.

Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswaswas present.
