The movement to have English declared the "official language" of the
United States has drawn fire from language educators and from
advocates for Native languages. James Crawford, president of the
Institute for Language and Education Policy, will give a free public
lecture on the topic titled "Why Official English? Using Language as a
Wedge" 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sam Noble Museum in Norman. The
presentation is one in a series of public lectures associated with
"Language Change, Loss and Revitalization," a University of Oklahoma
Presidential Dream Course.

During the past 20 years, James Crawford has specialized in
research-based advocacy for English and heritage-language learners as
an independent writer, lecturer, and consultant. From 2004 to 2006, he
served as executive director of the National Association for Bilingual
Education. He is the author of many books, including "Educating
English Learners: Language Diversity in the Classroom," "At War with
Diversity: U.S. Language Policy in an Age of Anxiety," and "Hold Your
Tongue: Bilingualism and the Politics of 'English Only.'"

A full listing of public presentations associated with the
Presidential Dream Course can be found on the museum's Web site:
www.snomnh.ou.edu/publicprograms. The next lecture in the series will
take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 5. Leanne Hinton, professor emerita from the
University of California at Berkeley, will present "Why 'Dead
Languages' Are Only Sleeping: Language Revitalization for Endangered
Languages Around the World."
