Language policy: Hearing today

BANGALORE: A division Bench on Wednesday will take up a batch of
contempt petitions plus a writ appeal filed by the government on the
language policy (medium of instruction) issue. Justice N Kumar will
hear the case. At the last hearing on July 3, advocate general Ashok
Haranahalli had sought time to discuss the matter with authorities.
However, the high court had clearly told the government to comply with
the full Bench verdict in absence of any stay from the Supreme Court.
In another development, the government had moved the Apex court on
Monday and got the hearing of a special leave petition (SLP) changed
from August 10 to July 21.

The government may ask the high court to defer the hearing on the
contempt petitions till the Apex court hears state's SLP on July 21.
Rajajinagar Education Society, a member institute of KUSMA; Garden
Educational Trust and other schools had filed these contempt
petitions, claiming that the refusal by authorities to register their
institutes as English-medium schools is a violation of the full Bench
order (July 2, 2008). "It's also a violation of the single Bench
orders on July 11 and April 6, through which a clear direction to the
state to consider the applications was given," the petitioners said.
However, the government hung on to the SLP filed before the Apex
court.
