Abstract
Language policy is a matter of great importance to developing
countries, particularly those that were under colonial rule prior to
independence. A prominent issue is the choice of an official and
national language in situations where the language of the colonial
power was essential for economic development and international
communication, and the national language was not equipped for this
purpose. Such was the case in Swaziland, and this article gives a
description of Swaziland's language policy for schools. First, a
general discussion of language policy is provided in order to put
Swaziland's language situation into the Anglophone perspective.
Second, Swaziland's language policy is discussed, based on language
'policy' documents prepared by the Ministry of Education. Finally,
even though both English and siSwati are considered official
languages, English will however continue to be employed as the major
vehicle for economic development and international trade and
communication.
