Slovak language law human rights failure, says PM
Monday 11:56, January 4th, 2010

The dispute over Slovakia's amended State Language Act is more of a
failure of human rights than a success story for Slovak diplomacy,
Hungarian prime minister Gordon Bajnai told MTI on Sunday.
Recommendations by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe, as well as remarks by officials of the European Council, the
US Senate and the US Congress have all indicated that Slovakia's
international reputation has suffered from that country's adoption of
a law which contradicts European norms and agreements, Bajnai said.

Bajnai repeated the government's earlier position that Hungary would
seek legal remedy at international forums on behalf of Slovakia's
national minorities - among them an ethnic Hungarian community -
harmed by the new Slovak law.

At the same time, the prime minister said that a diplomatic
breakthrough had been achieved concerning the Hungarian minority in
Ukraine. The Ukrainian government has informed Hungary that it would
make arrangements to supply missing Hungarian-language textbooks to
ethnic schools before March, and it would also make it possible for
ethnic Hungarians to take secondary school final and higher education
entrance examinations in their native tongue in the future. (MTI)
