Linguistic Field(s): Language Documentation

Call Deadline: 31-Jan-2010

Meeting Description:

The Hans Rausing Endangered Language Programme at the School of Oriental and
African Studies is holding a one-day international workshop on Saturday 27
February 2010, 9.30am - 6.00pm.

Call for Papers

The deadline has been extended until the end of January. We would
particularly welcome interdisciplinary papers, so please feel free to
circulate this to colleagues.

The goal of the workshop is to explore the sustainability of
endangered languages, and sustainability of research (in both theory
and practice). The keynote speaker is Lenore Grenoble from the
University of Chicago.

Issues to be discussed could include:

1. how communities can sustain languages and linguistic ecologies
2. links between language maintenance and sustainable human development
3. preservation of traditional knowledge and indigenous paradigms of teaching,
learning, and research
4. making the outcomes of our research sustainable
5. whether sustaining languages and knowledge is something that researchers
can contribute to, or is solely the responsibility of communities and speakers

For more details, and a registration form, see
http://www.hrelp.org/events/workshops/sustainability/index.html. The
workshop is
one of the events in Endangered Languages Week 2010.

Abstracts will be peer reviewed and should be a maximum of 300 words (not
including any references) and should be sent to: elapsoas.ac.uk.
