'Overseas doctors must speak good English'

Out-of-hours doctors must be better regulated, says leader of the British
Medical Association

The Guardian, Monday 28th June

Overseas doctors <http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/doctors> with an
inadequate knowledge of English must not be allowed to practice medicine in
the UK, the leader of the British Medical Association said today.

Hamish Meldrum, chairman of the BMA Council, said at the association's
annual representative meeting in Brighton that tougher checks and language
tests are needed to prevent another tragedy such as the death of pensioner
David Gray, who was given a lethal injection of a painkiller by Daniel
Obani, a German locum doctor, during his first shift in the UK.

"It cannot be acceptable for poorly trained, badly regulated doctors whose
knowledge of English is about as good as my knowledge of Chinese, to be able
to practise, virtually unchallenged, in the UK," said Dr Meldrum.
