Welsh language policy and legislation update

Welcome to the sixth Welsh language news update from the Welsh
Assembly Government. This update summarises progress, and gives
further information on work the Assembly Government is doing on
developing Welsh language legislation and policy.
Proposed Welsh Language Measure

At the beginning of April, the Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones,
held a series of public meetings around Wales in order to raise
awareness about the Proposed Measure and what it contains. A DVD was
shown as part of these events, it is available to view on the Welsh
Assembly Government’s YouTube channel.

The proposed Measure is currently being discussed by one of the
National Assembly’s Legislation committees. The committee has received
views from a number of individuals and organisations and copies of the
consultation responses are available on the National Assembly for
Wales website. During the autumn period it will be possible to
introduce changes. The Measure could become law in early 2011.

The proposed Measure and associated documents are available on the
National Assembly for Wales website.

Welsh Medium Education Strategy

A major new strategy to drive forward Welsh-medium education provision
in Wales has been announced by Education Minister Leighton Andrews.
The unveiling of the Welsh-medium Education Strategy delivers the One
Wales commitment to create a strategy to develop effective
Welsh-language provision from nursery through to further and higher
education.
