ABC’s Language Policy

The school has been working on its Language Policy since last year.
Here is the final version which includes the philosophy as well as the
guiding principles. Staff also work with indicators for each of the
guiding principles which provides greater detail regarding
implementation. During the recent training day (Monday 4th October
2010), staff met to reflect upon current practice and develop ways to
implement this policy.

Language Philosophy Statement

The acquisition of language is a dynamic, life-long process,
fundamental for learning and is therefore closely related to success
in school. Language is the process by which meaning and knowledge is
negotiated and constructed and a successful curriculum will offer a
rich framework of positive opportunities for language development
across the curriculum. Since proficiency in cognitive academic
language is inseparable from successful learning, all teachers are
language teachers.

The ability to communicate fluently in a variety of contexts in more
than one language is essential to the concept of an international
education that promotes intercultural understanding.

Guiding Principles

   1. Teaching and Learning activities are planned and delivered in a
way that reflects the importance of language in facilitating effective
learning across the curriculum and within each curriculum area.
   2. The school environment, resources and informal curriculum
provide a comprehensive range of opportunities to support bilingual
language learning.
   3. All ABC students acquire bilingual proficiency in English and
Spanish and are able to access the curriculum effectively and
efficiently in both languages.
   4. All staff have access to quality external and internal language
and literacy professional development and work collegially to improve
practice.
   5. All members of the ABC community respect, promote and contribute
to the success of the students’ language development in both Spanish
and English.
   6. Through the use and celebration of its target languages the ABC
will promote bi-culturalism and use this as a springboard to a broader
understanding and appreciation of other cultures.
