Language lecturers from around the country are to gather in
Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) tomorrow, Friday October
15, for the 11th Institutes of Technology (IoT) Languages Strategy
Network meeting. Hosted by the GMIT School of Humanities, the
Languages Strategy Network builds on existing language expertise
within the IoT sector, and promotes good practice and innovation
within the various colleges through inter-institutional collaboration.
Established in 2006, the network give lecturers a platform to exchange
ideas and knowledge on language policy and planning, teaching and
learning, current research, and good practice models.

Delegates at the meeting will be made up of language teachers,
language students, language specialists, non-specialists, and
management. GMIT offers students opportunities to study a range of
languages including French, German, Spanish, and Irish as modules on
degree programmes in business, humanities, hotel management, and
software development.

Mary MacCague, head of the School of Humanities at GMIT, said: “Topics
for discussion include language numbers at third-level in general,
language policies, new developments in language learning and teaching,
and inter-institutional research. “There will also be a presentation
on the ECML (European Centre for Modern Languages) and The European
Language Label by Nellie Woods-Tattersall of the Education Service,
Léargas. GMIT is delighted to welcome the participants and to
underline once again the importance of acquiring a second or third
language.”
