WALES & WEST UTILITIES WELSH LANGUAGE POLICY

The Welsh Language Act 1993 encourages the private sector to offer Welsh
language services wherever possible, although no legal mandate is
imposed. Wales & West Utilities (WWU) has voluntarily adopted the
following principles in
promoting and supporting the Welsh language:-

Communication

WWU will respond in the same language to any communication received in Welsh.
We will accept written and electronic correspondence in Welsh from customers,
organisations or individuals and we will respond in the same language
used in the
initial communication, unless asked to do otherwise. Welsh-only
versions of correspondence/letters will be produced as far as possible
and distributed upon request.

Information leaflets & promotion

Where material is aimed directly at the end-user (consumer) i.e.,
Advance Warning
of Works, Street Furniture, etc., Welsh-only versions will be produced as far as
possible and distributed upon request.

Telephone contact

Welsh speaking staff will, wherever practical, be available to assist
with requests
from people who wish to conduct their business with the company through the
medium of Welsh.

Internal support for bilingualism

WWU’s Corporate Affairs Manager is the main point of contact for WWU people who
wish to discuss any issues relating to the use of Welsh in their work
environment.
Any suggestions from staff on the further use of the Welsh language in the
workplace will be taken to the company’s Management Team or Board as
appropriate.

Company website

The company’s website www.wwutilities.co.uk has been equipped with a Welsh site
where WWU will provide as much bilingual content as possible. Content, both in
English and Welsh, is subject to ongoing reviews and updates.
