Act and Policy on French Language Services

Act and Policy

Languages Act

Yukon’s Languages Act was enacted in 1988. Under this legislation:

    * The public has the right to use English, French, or a Yukon
aboriginal language in the Legislative Assembly;
    * The public has the right to use French or English in any Yukon court;
    * Yukon acts and regulations must be published in English and
French; both versions have equal authority; and
    * “Any member of the public in the Yukon has the right to
communicate with, and to receive available services from, any head or
central office of an institution of the Legislative Assembly or of the
Government of Yukon in English or French…” (Section 6 (1))

Languages Act

French Language Policy

The French Language Policy states that Yukon’s French-speaking
community is a partner in determining practical requirements under the
Languages Act and will be consulted to determine priorities for
government services.

The policy states that Deputy Ministers and Presidents of the Yukon
government are responsible to ensure the development and
implementation of departmental action plans for the provision of
services in French in accordance with the Languages Act and the
policy.

The policy states that services should be:

    * useful – meeting real, expressed needs of Yukon’s
French-speaking community;
    * useable – practical, accessible, consistently maintained and of
comparable quality to services in English; and
    * used – promoted to those who would potentially use them.
