CCSG passes foreign language policy

The Council of Commonwealth Student Governments passed legislation
Saturday at CCSG Council Weekend that could allow students more
freedom when it comes to choosing foreign language classes. Currently,
students who have taken two years of a language in high school must
enter into level two language courses. This often forces students into
a class they may be unready for and can lead to failure or having to
drop the class, CCSG Press Public Relations Director Danielle Zavala
(junior–telecommunications) said.

The Foreign Language Policy would allow those students who may be
unprepared for a higher level language class the option of entering
into lower level courses. CCSG Academic Affairs Director Paul Ferrera
said it aligns the placement policies with math and science classes.
He added it allows students to go into whatever language they’re
prepared for.

Ultimately, it’s the students who are paying for the credits, CCSG
President Peter Khoury said, and they should be given the opportunity
to succeed. And many people, like CCSG Northwest Caucus Director Alex
Angstadt, believe this policy should have been implemented already.

“I wish that this was brought up last year because I’m going through
this now,” Angstadt (junior–political science) said.

With CCSG’s approval of the legislation, Ferrera (junior–finance) will
begin meeting with Associate Dean of Liberal Arts Christopher Long to
discuss implementing the policy. CCSG will also work closely with the
University Park Undergraduate Association to move the legislation
along, Ferrera said.

Council Weekend included guest speaker Senior Director of Housing and
Food Services for the Commonwealth Campuses Chris Hurley, as well as a
presentation from Penn State Police Services.

Hurley’s visit gave representatives the opportunity to learn more
about the Housing and Food Services program and to voice their own
concerns or questions.

Questions brought to the table touched on a range of topics including
the cost of meal plans, menu items and the cost of LionCash+ to
vendors who wish to participate in the program.

CCSG representatives also passed a veteran recognition resolution that
would encourage Penn State to further recognize veterans and Veteran’s
Day.

Overall, Khoury (senior–biology) said the weekend was a success.

“It was a long weekend, but an extremely productive weekend,” he said.
“It puts us at a good position for December.”

The next CCSG Council Weekend is scheduled for Dec. 2 and 3.
