On March 12 and 13, McGill University and the Institut de management
et de communication interculturels (ISIT-France) hosted a major
colloquium on translation policy and issues in the strategic
management of language policy.

This colloquium strove to provide a contextual background against
which the translation policies of the 21st century will emerge no
matter what the organizational situation. Reflections on issues, case
analyses and theoretical approaches to these types of strategic
planning are needed in order for government officials, civil society
activists, business people and concerned citizens to engage in a
positive manner in policy changes which are responsive to societal
needs in the broadest sense of the term.

For this occasion and at the request of McGill Professor James
Archibald, AILIA’s Executive Director Luc Rainville gave a short talk
on the state of the language industry and his organization’s efforts
to promote it.

With the concept of a "language industry" still relatively unknown in
France, European participants learned more about the industry’s
importance in Canada. Mr. Rainville also spoke about AILIA’s
partnership with the federal government’s Canadian Language Sector
Enhancement Program.
