SDLP - Social Democratic and Labour Party : Bradley: Stormont a cold
house for Irish language visitors
07/04/2012 | 10:11am US/Eastern

SDLP Irish language spokesperosn Dominic Bradley MLA has said the
Irish Language Policy within the Assembly is totally unacceptable and
has called on the Assembly Commission to review the situation as a
matter of urgency.

Wed 4th July

Mr Bradley who raised the issue in a question to the Assembly
Commission said: "It is not acceptable that Irish Medium Schools
visiting Stormont to gain a better understanding of how Parliament
works cannot receive this visitation in Irish.

"This situation goes to the heart of the Good Friday Agreement and the
commitment to remove barriers to the Irish Language.

"The profile of the Irish Language in the environment of Parliament
Buildings is non-existent and equates to a single leaflet printed
in-house.

"The SDLP is the only Party to have made a submission to the
Commission's consultation on a Language Policy. This was submitted in
January and we have yet to receive response.

"It's high time the Commission brought forward an acceptable policy on
the Irish Language and I will continue to vigorously pursue this
campaign until such a policy is in place".
