BANGALORE: In an effort to minimize rural-urban divide, the BJP-ruled
government in Karnataka on Tuesday said it would positively consider
the demand to open more English medium schools in the rural parts of
the state.

Considered to be one of the liberal moves by the government, primary
and secondary education minister Visveshvara Hegde Kageri said the
demand has been pouring from large section of population across the
state to open English medium schools in rural areas. "To face the
challenges of the present day world and make our rural students
competitive, English medium schools are necessary," the minister
maintained.

The government has already given permission to open 341 English
schools for the current academic year, but the move has been severely
opposed by the litterateurs. They have set 15-day deadline for the
government to withdraw the order.

Ruling out withdrawal of the order, Kageri pointed out that lack of
government-run English medium schools have been one of the main
reasons for the private schools to seek donation from the students.
"Government's move to open English medium schools is in tune with 1994
language policy. Opening English medium schools has nothing to do with
neglect of Kannada. The Kannada language schools is our prime
importance," Kageri defended.

The minister said the Karnataka high court in 2009 opined that
government can open English medium schools right from class one.
However, the government has appealed in the Supreme Court on this
order. The apex court has made Union government, a party to this case.
"I have met Central ministers several times and urged them to come
with a comprehensive language policy so that the states have clear
picture on the subject. The response from the Centre was not
encouraging," Kageri said.
