*NGOs call on Speaker not to allow bill on language policy*

*A number of non-governmental organizations called on Volodymyr Lytvyn not
to allow adoption of draft law No. 9073 "On the Principles of State
Language Policy," since according to their conviction, this will lead to
equaling of statuses of Russian and Ukrainian languages.*

Representatives of non-governmental organizations stress that the Speaker
will not manage to exonerate from responsibility in case of adoption of
this law. Activists also paid attention to the fact that the OSCE High
Commissioner on National Minorities characterized the law on the languages
as such, which may extend the existing language division inside Ukraine and
provoke a strong negative response, which will lead to sharpening of
tension. In addition, the Finance Ministry stood against adoption of this
draft law, noting that its realization needs large expenses from the state
budget.
