While the official language of instruction at the Utrecht School of
the Arts (HKU) is Dutch, some course units are particularly well
suited for foreign students.

In nearly all practical subjects the HKU has adopted the studio-based
system. In this system students have their own workspace and consult
their lecturers as needed. English speaking students can attend most
of these course units. Exceptions to this are the theoretical course
units such as the History of Art or the History of Culture, which are
traditional style lectures given in Dutch.

Learning Dutch We highly recommend that you learn the Dutch language
as soon as possible. The Nuffic offers good information on Dutch
language courses for international students. Read more.

There are various institutes in Utrecht that provide courses in 'Dutch
as a foreign language'. Unfortunately, HKU cannot contribute in any
way to the costs. Further information about the available courses can
be obtained directly from the following language centres on this page.
