Language Conference hopes to encourage Billingualism in Canada

Speakers from around the world are in Calgary this weekend for a
conference discussing language policy and the rights of official
language communities. While our country has had language planning
policies for over 45 years now, many believe there is still a
disconnect between linguistic duality and everyday realities in
Canada.

Canada Commissioner of Official Languages Graham Fraser says
foreigners are still surprised by the lack of bilingualism throughout
our country "Many immigrants come to Canada believing because Canada
is an officially billingual country that everybody speaks both
languages and it comes as a bit of a shock to them" says Fraser.
Fraser hopes this conference will provide Canadians a better
understanding of the values of speaking both English and French. He
hopes Universities accross Canada can provide students with the
opportunity to develop and learn their second language. (JSL)
