Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar said
here on Saturday that the government would announce a new language policy
for education in two months.

He told presspersons that a meeting would be held on December 4 wherein the
Advocate-General and others would participate.

He clarified that the government would not give permission to any
institution to open English-medium schools till the new policy was unveiled.

The Minister said the government was studying the language policies of
neighbouring States, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had written to his
counterparts there on this.

The State government had no option but to announce a language policy in
view of the recent High Court direction to it to accept an application for
opening an English-medium school and the Supreme Court ruling, saying
parents had the right to choose the medium of instruction for their
children.

He said at a seminar on education that the Constitution should be amended
so that a uniform language policy was followed all over the country.

Later, the Minister took part in an interactive programme, organised by the
city-based Samadarshi Vedike that demanded, among others, that primacy be
given to mother tongue as the medium of instruction as that was the most
effective way of learning. The Minister reiterated that the government
would recruit over 16,000 teachers by June.
