The beauty of language diversity
  Fernand de Varennes discusses language diversity, rights and policies at
the LPP 2014 Conference.

Each September, as the school year begins, a group of international
students, academics, researchers and stakeholders get together to discuss
the state of language and language policy around the world.

The Multidisciplinary Approaches in Language Policy and Planning Conference
<http://www.werklund.ucalgary.ca/lpp/>, organized by the Werklund School of
Education’s <http://www.werklund.ucalgary.ca/home> professor Tom Ricento
<http://werklund.ucalgary.ca/educ_info/profiles/thomas-ricento> and his
team, regularly draws people from all over the world to present their
ideas, to discuss challenges related to the topics surrounding language and
language policy, and share their ideas on a range of issues

This year’s conference, the third annual event, saw close to 100
submissions presented from more than two dozen countries, spread out over
the three days of the conference, which was held at the University of
Calgary’s Rozsa Centre .

The first plenary speaker at the conference, Fernand de Varennes, is
affiliated with the Universities of Hong Kong, Pretoria, and Vytautas
Magnus University of Lithuania, and he gave his talk on “Language
diversity, language rights, and the contribution of language policies.”
