SOFIA -- Bulgaria has criticized the decision of the new authorities in
Ukraine to cancel the State Language Policy Act.

The goal of the move was to "limit Russian influence in that country,"
according to reports.

But it also canceled the recognition of Bulgarian as a regional language.

The status was given to languages of minority groups who make up more than
ten percent of residents in an area.

Bulgaria stressed that the decision affects the 200,000-strong Bulgarian
community in southern Ukraine.

"The current political leaders in Ukraine must demonstrate responsibility
and strive for inclusion of all groups in the Ukrainian society with
respect for human rights and the rule of law", said Bulgaria's Foreign
Ministry in a statement.
