Expert panel on ‘Education Policy’ to meet on Jan 22 Committee Mandated To

Jammu, Jan 10: The process for drafting much-awaited `Education Policy’ for
Jammu and Kashmir is expected to take-off from January 22 when the expert
panel, constituted by the government recently, will meet for the first time.
“Although, the members have already started work on the assignment at their
own level, but the first ever official meeting of the expert panel will be
held here on 22 January”, informed sources told Greater Kashmir adding that
official invitation have been sent to all the members in this regard.

The state government, in November last year, had accorded sanction to the
constitution of an Expert Panel to work-out formulation of an Education
Policy for the school system in J&K. The proposed education policy includes
School Education Vision Document-2025 and Language Policy: medium of
instruction, regional languages and school curriculum.


The Expert Panel has been asked to furnish the report with its
recommendation within three months.


Sources said first meeting of the panel holds significance as the members
for the first time will interact, give suggestions and also chalk-out their
future strategy.
“Members from outside the state will also have feedback regarding
topography and aspirations of the people from different parts of the
state”, they said adding; “The motive of drafting the policy is to improve
the education scenario of the state on modern lines”.


Secretary School Education, Haridesh Kumar Singh, when contacted, said the
process for framing the policy has been set into motion. “The committee
members have been invited to meet on 22 January and hold deliberations on
the issue”, he said.


The panel comprises of Prof Farida Khan of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi
as Chairperson, Masud Choudhary, Former Vice- Chancellor BGSB University
Rajouri, Prof Ramakant Agnihotri, Advisor Vidhya Bhawan Society Udaipur
(Rajasthan), Prof A G Madhosh, Former Dean, Faculty of Education,
University of Kashmir, Prof Rekha Choudhary, Former Dean Research Studies,
University of Jammu, Sonam Angchuk, SECMOL, Leh, Prof Ajit Angral, Jammu,
Dr Nandini Manjreker, School of Education., Centre for Sociology, Tata
Institute of Social Science, Mumbai, Jamal Kidwai, Director Aman Trust, New
Delhi and G N Masudi, Former Joint Director/ Principal SIE, Srinagar as its
members.
“Once framed, the Education Policy apart from other issues, will also take
care of the fast declining staff-student ratio in government schools,
suggest ways for improving dismal results of government schools, suggest
ways to improve enrolment and other steps for improving quality of
education in the state”, officials said.
