Multidisciplinary Approaches to Multilingualism

Modern processes of integration, mobility, different means of communication
and foreign language learning have made multilingualism a key feature of
today's world. The topic of multilingualism has been chosen for the 28th
CALS conference focus due to its current and comprehensive character. The
intention is to gather applied linguists with the purpose of discussing
multilingualism (as well as bilingualism) as a psycholinguistic,
sociolinguistic and glotodidactic phenomenon. 

The official languages of the conference are Croatian, English and German.

Announcement:

This year's conference will host a round table entitled: Learners with
Special Needs and Second / Foreign Language Learning.

(Hearing and visual impairments, dysleksia/dysgraphia, and ADHD) 

Teaching special needs students requires a multidisciplinary approach. This
is due to a variety of specific characteristics pertaining to their
cognitive and affective profiles as well as specific potential which is
commonly developed in individuals with atypical abilities. 

The aim of this round table is to initiate discussion on various issues and
concerns related to second / foreign language learning in students with
special needs - from theoretical questions and research methodology to
everyday classroom challenges.

Call for Papers:

We invite papers addressing one of the following conference strands:

1. Multilingualism and second language mastering (psycholinguistic view) 
2. Multilingualism and second language teaching (glotodidactic view)
3. Multilingualism and language processing (research within the area of
experimental psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics) 
4. Multilingualism, culture and society (sociolinguistic view:
multilingualism in communities, languages in contact, language diversity,
vertical and horizontal multilingualism, multilingualism in the
interrelation between a dialect and a standard variety, hereditary
languages, attitudes and stereotypes with regard to multilingualism)
5. Multilingualism and language policy (multilingualism as a legal and
political fact, national and foreign multilingualism, regional languages in
relation to the standard varieties and national languages, minority
languages in relation to the language of the majority, multilingualism and
educational system.
6. Multilingualism and translation (studies in translatology)

Submission of Abstracts: 

Presenters may submit only one paper proposal (as presenters or
co-presenters). 	

Abstracts (no more than 300 words, written in the language of the
presentation and one other official language of the conference) should be
anonymous and sent as attachments in .pdf and .doc formats to the following
e-mail address: hdpl.conference at gmail.com. Please specify ''HDPL 2014'' in
the subject line. The body of the email should contain the following data
in the following order: name and surname, e-mail address, telephone number,
conference strand number and the language in which the authors wish to
present. 

The abstracts should clearly state the problem to be addressed, the
research hypotheses, the methodology to be used and the potential
contribution of the paper.

All abstracts will be blind reviewed by two reviewers according to the
above given criteria. All accepted abstracts will be published in the Book
of Abstracts and made available to all participants.

Presentations should last 20 minutes, followed by a 10-minute discussion
period.

The abstracts should be provided in a separate document and sent to:
hdpl.conference at gmail.com. 

The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 16 February 2014. 
The notification of acceptance will be provided by 11 March 2014.

Incomplete registration forms will not be taken into consideration.
