DISCIPLINARY action could be taken against leisure centre staff in Tywyn
and Dolgellau who do not greet customers in Welsh.

The minutes of Gwynedd Council’s language committee reveal that staff at
councilrun leisure centres in Bangor, Dolgellau and Tywyn, could face
disciplinary action if they do not speak to customers in Welsh, as they
would be breaching the language policy.

“Some staff lacked confidence or were reluctant to use the Welsh language,
despite efforts to persuade them to at least greet customers in Welsh,” the
report says. “The department was impressing on staff who were reluctant to
use the Welsh language that the next step could possibly be to discipline
them, as they were breaching the language policy.”

A council spokesman said the leisure department “is continuing to focus on
those few members of staff who lack confidence in their language skills.
“No measures have been taken against any individuals who cannot comply with
the council’s language policy as set out in the terms of emp loyment agreed
with each employee.

“However, as the report states, consideration could be given to taking such
steps in some circumstances in future if deemed appropriate, reasonable,
and in accordance with local terms and conditions of service.”

According to the council it was seeking to comply with the Welsh Language
Measure of 2011 which stated that those in Wales should be able to live
their lives through the medium of Welsh if they chose to do so.
