DONETSK, March 17. /ITAR-TASS/. The Russian language retains the status of
the regional language in Ukraine's Donetsk region, Andrei Shishatsky,
chairman of the Donetsk regional council, told an administrative meeting on
Monday. "Russian language is the regional language in the Donetsk region,
as the law 'On the Fundamentals of the State Language Policy' has not been
abrogated," Shishatsky said, as reported the regional state
administration's press service on Monday.

Shishatsky said the regional council had earlier won all lawsuits on the
language question, and the decision of the session at which the Russian
language was given the status of the regional language in the Donetsk
region remains valid.

Ukraine's parliament on February 23, 2014 voted for the abrogation of the
law and this caused social tension in some regions of the country. Speaker
of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Turchynov, appointed by the Verkhovna Rada
interim president of Ukraine, had not signed the law.

At the same time, Turchynov made instructions for setting up a working
group to draft a new "language" law taking into account Ukrainian regions'
interests.
